I first tried Attune’s Probiotic Chocolate Bar during the Healthy Living Summit; I devoured it before I even had a chance to write a review about it
. Luckily, I had a coupon from Attune (also part of the HLS swag) and I managed to snag one up from the Whole Foods at South Loop.
So, what is it?
Well, Attune’s Probiotic Chocolate Bar is a chocolate bar filled with probiotics which promote healthy digestion. It’s a tasty alternative to taking a probiotic pill or eating kefir and yogurt.
Nutritional Info:
( Source )
Ingredients:
Dark Chocolate Coating (chocolate, evaporated cane juice, cocoa powder, inulin, calcium carbonate, cocoa butter, soy lecithin [an emulsifier], vanilla), *6.1B Probiotic Cultures: (Bifidobacterium lactis HN019, Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM™, Lactobacillus casei LC-11).
Practicality:
While I love the idea of taking my probiotics in chocolate form, I had a slight problem with the dark chocolate flavor. We all know that dark chocolate is harder than milk chocolate to begin with, now imagine trying to bite into a refrigerated piece of dark chocolate.
See, if you leave the chocolate at room temperature, you risk killing the probiotics, but if you keep it in the fridge, it’s hard to eat. It’s kind of like a Catch-22. I can’t speak for the other flavors, but this was my specific issue with the dark chocolate flavor. Dave suggested that I break the chocolate up and sprinkle it onto different cold foods like overnight oats, which is a great idea, but if you want to eat your bar on the go, breaking it up would not be ideal.
Taste:
The bar was simply delicious. Even though it was hard to bite into, the chocolate was richly flavored and very decadent.
Effectiveness:
I can’t really comment on the effectiveness of the bars in terms of digestive health but according to Attune, the dark chocolate bar contains 3 grams of fiber and 5 times the live active cultures in yogurt.
Cost:
The bars cost around $1.19 each at Whole Foods. This is kind of pricey for a single serving of probiotics but it’s a great option for people who hate taking pills and/or don’t ingest dairy.
Aesthetics:
The packaging on the bar is really cute. I love that it says vegan on the side because I hate spending a lot of time looking through ingredient lists for animal products.
It’s also gluten free!
Accessibility:
I’m on the fence about this one. The closest store that carried these bars was about 10 miles away so I had to drive into the city to look for them. However, they were easy to find once I was in the store (I love that the label tells you exactly where to look). I don’t think it would be fair for me to take points off here because there were an abundance of stores in Chicagoland carrying the product, just not the ones in my immediate vicinity.
Final Verdict:
Overall, I would give this product 8.5 stars out of 10 stars with 1 star taken off for practicality and a 1/2 star off for price. I would buy this product again because I don’t like taking probiotic pills and because the bars are delicious.
thanks for sharing this review!!
I have been wanting to try these bars, I am going to do so now.
I am with you… I LOVE when the VEGAN and GLUTEN FREE labeling is very easy to see… many stores have GF sections now, but it’s just nice to see right away
I hope you like them! I’m planning to try the other dark chocolate flavors soon.
mm chocolate, i can think of another ooey gooey wonderful chocolate product!!
trevor you are too much!
thanks for this review Lin. Very helpful. I have a sample and I’ve yet to try it. I love dark chocolate so maybe I will like it. I wonder if the chocolate melts in your mouth easily or are you suppose to chew it while it’s cold and eat it. Hmmm?
